چکیده

Another experiment was carried out in which the opposite environmental conditions were obtained, viz., those of waterlogging. In this a comparison was made between applying Ceresan on the cutting and on the soil. Co.290 was planted, and after planting, 11 inches of rain fell in 18 days; the field was under water for some considerable time. In a previous paperreference was made to the beneficial results which had been obtained experimentally by the application of fungicides to sugarcane cnttings prior to planting, especially where the disease known as Pineapple Disease was present.

Bat activity in relation to fire and fire surrogate treatments in southern pine stands

Forest managers often use thinning and prescribed burning to reduce the risk of wildfire and insect outbreaks. Because thinning and burning alter the structure of forest stands and may affect insect prey abundance, they may change the suitability of stands for bats. Our objective was to test the effects of thinning and burning on bat foraging and commuting activity in pine stands in the Clemson...

Initial Effects of Reproduction Cutting Treatments on Residual Hard Mast Production in the Ouachita Mountains

We compared indices of total hard mast production (oak and hickory combined) in 20, secondgrowth, pine-hardwood stands under five treatments to determine the effects of different reproduction treatments on mast production in the Ouachita Mountains. We evaluated mast production in mature unharvested controls and stands under four reproduction cutting methods (single-tree selection, group selecti...

Improving Germination of Single-budded Sugarcane Setts Using Thermotherapy and Fungicide Treatments

Experiments to investigate the effect of various thermotherapy and fungicide treatments on the germination of single-budded setts (SBS) of sugarcane are described. Treatment in water at 52OC for 10 minutes significantly increased germination and plant growth. Immersing setts in cold water containing Eria@ (62,5 ppm carbendazim + 31,25 ppm difenoconazole; 0,5 m1 in 1 L) for 10 minutes also impro...

Ponderosa pine restoration and turkey roost site use in northern Arizona

Ecological restoration of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in the southwestern United States is a relatively new, adaptive management practice that potentially alters wildlife habitat during and immediately after restoration treatments. To determine whether restoration treatments affected Merriam’s wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) use of roost sites, we relocated 91 of 120 tur...

Effects of thinning, prescribed burning, and burning season on the physiological performance of ponderosa pine

Low elevation ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws.) forests of the northern Rocky Mountains historically experienced frequent, low intensity fires that maintained open, uneven-aged stands. A century of fire suppression has led to denser ponderosa pine forests with higher competition for resources, higher tree stress, and greater risk of insect attack and stand destroying fire. Activ...
